Kyrgyzstan: U.S. Embassy Receives Letter Containing White Powder

BISHKEK -- The U.S. Embassy in Bishkek says it is investigating after receiving a letter containing a white powder.

Embassy officials told RFE/RL on October 29 that the suspicious letter was immediately sent for testing after it was received a day earlier.

Test results showed that the powder was not dangerous.

The nature of the substance was not described, however.

It is unclear why the envelope was sent to the U.S. Embassy or by whom.

No one has claimed responsibility.

Embassy operations in Bishkek were not affected by the incident.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
