Kyrgyz lawyer Janysh Barakov told RFE/RL on November 21 that his client, journalist Guljan Sheripbaeva, who was arrested last week on a charge of inciting hatred, had been transferred to house arrest a day earlier. Sheripbaeva, who owns the Nazar News website, was detained on November 16 at her workplace in Bishkek. In recent months, Sheripbaeva posted several articles on social media criticizing the Central Asian nation's government. She has been known as a supporter of the former deputy chief of the Customs Service, Raimbek Matraimov, who in 2020-21 was at the center of a high-profile corruption scandal.
