China says Libya's opposition leader will visit this week in a fresh setback for Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, The Associated Press reports.

China's Foreign Ministry said that Mustafa Abdel-Jalil would be in China on June 21-22.

No other details were immediately available.

Abdel-Jalil chairs the Transitional National Council, the umbrella organization of rebel groups trying to unseat Qaddafi.

China has recently stepped up efforts to persuade the two sides to seek a settlement.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
