Lufthansa cabin staff have launched a 24-hour nationwide strike, forcing the German air carrier to cancel 1,200 flights September 7 and over the weekend.

The strike affects Germany's six main airports, including Frankfurt, Berlin, and Munich.

The employees' union is seeking a 5-percent pay increase for cabin crew and assurances on jobs.

Lufthansa is offering a 3.5 percent boost and is calling for a slight increase in working hours.

The latest strike looks set to affect far more passengers than three limited work stoppages over the last week after negotiations broke down.
