SKOPJE -- Low turnout and minor irregularities have been reported in Macedonia, where voters are participating in the second round of municipal elections, including for the mayoral post in the capital, Skopje.

RFE/RL’s Balkan Service reports that election officials in the southeastern municipality of Strumitsa said a ballot box had been badly damaged and that an unknown assailant had fired shots from a gas pistol outside the ballot station.

A heavy police presence was reported in a number of municipalities where it was feared the election would provoke clashes between local Macedonian and Albanian residents.

Low turnout was reported in many municipalities.

Opposition Albanian parties have joined forces in a number of municipalities to oppose ethnic Macedonian parties who took the most votes in the first round on March 24.
