Malala, Satyarthi Urge Unity On Education Ahead of Nobel Ceremony

The 2014 Nobel Peace Prize winners -- Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan and children's rights activist Kailash Satyarthi of India -- have urged closer cooperation between their two countries on education.

Speaking in Oslo, Norway on December 9 – a day before being presented their Nobel awards – the 17-year-old Malala and 60-year-old Satyarthi stressed the importance of uniting people across borders and religions by educating children and freeing them from poverty.

Malala, shot in the head by the Taliban two years ago for insisting girls have as much right to an education as boys, said it is “not only the right but the duty” of all children to be educated.

Shazia Ramazan and Kainat Riaz – two friends of Malala who have traveled with her to Oslo -- told journalists they are bound together in “Mission Malala” to ensure young girls get a chance to study.
