Two Moscow railway employees have been detained following an accident on the capital's subway system that claimed 23 lives and seriously injured dozens of others.
Russia's Investigative Committee said on July 16 that the Moscow subway's senior foreman of railway services, Valery Bashkatov, and his assistant, Yury Gordov, have been questioned over possible violations of subway safety regulations.
Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said investigators believe the crash may have been caused by defective work in the replacement of a railway switch mechanism.
Moscow is observing a day of mourning for the victims on July 16.
Another victim died in a local hospital one day after the incident, raising the death toll to 23.
Six of those who were killed were reportedly foreigners, including two Chinese, two Tajiks, one Kyrgyz, and a Moldovan.
Three subway cars came off the track while traveling at 70 kilometers per hour between the Slaviansky Boulevard and Park Pobedy stations during morning rush hour.
