Three U.S. National Guard Soldiers Shot, Killed In Nevada

In the United States, five soldiers serving in the U.S. National Guard have been shot by a gunman while dining at a restaurant in the western state of Nevada.

Officials said two of the National Guard soldiers died, along with a third person, in the shooting early today in the Nevada capital, Carson City. A third National Guard soldier, a woman, died later in hospital from her injuries.

The two other National Guard soldiers who were shot were among seven people injured in the rampage.

Police said the shooter, a 32-year-old man, used an AK-47 assault rifle when he opened fire on the Guardsmen, who were all wearing military uniforms.

Officials said the suspected gunman apparently shot himself and later died at a hospital.

No possible motive for the shooting was immediately available.

The shooting has been condemned by the U.S. Defense Department, which called it a "senseless loss of life."

U.S. National Guardsmen are citizen-soldiers, meaning they work part time for the National Guard and also have civilian jobs.

Thousands of Guardsmen have served tours of duty with U.S. forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.
