Pakistan is marking its annual Defense Day on September 6 with a nationwide minute of silence to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its 1965 war against India.
The war over the disputed territory of Kashmir caused thousands of casualties on both sides.
It was a culmination of clashes that took place from April until September 1965, when the United States and the Soviet Union pressured Pakistan and India to agree to a cease-fire leading to a January 1966 peace accord known as the Tashkent Declaration.
The central event in the September 6 Defense Day activities is to be held at the General Headquarters of Pakistan’s military in Rawalpindi.
Pakistan’s Air Force also is presenting an air show over a park in Islamabad that includes fighter jets and army helicopters.
Celebrations also are scheduled in Karachi, Peshawar, Multan, and in Azad Jammu and Kashmir -- the Pakistani-administered part of disputed Kashmir.
