Pakistan Explosion Kills13 During Shi'ite Procession


At least 13 people were killed and 20 more injured today when an explosion hit a religious procession in the Pakistani town of Khanpur in Punjab Province.

Hundreds of Pakistani Shi'ites were exiting a place of worship after gathering for one of the main observances in the Shi'a calendar when the explosion went off.

A local police official said investigators were still attempting to determine the cause of the blast, but the district police chief, Sohail Chatta, said the explosion was the result of a bomb that had been planted ahead of the procession.

Shi'a Muslims make up about 20 percent of Pakistan's population and are often targeted in militant attacks.
