Unidentified armed gunmen shot and killed two police officers in northwestern Pakistan on January 31, police and local residents told RFE/RL.

The attack occurred in the Doaba area of the Hangu district. Police spokesman Muhammad Tahir told RFE/RL by phone that the motorcycle-riding gunmen opened fire at the two police officers before fleeing the scene.

The two victims were controlling traffic in Doaba Bazaar when they came under attack. No group has yet to claim responsibility for the attack.

The incident happened just a day after armed men killed a pastor and wounded another in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan's volatile northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

On January 25, a police officer deployed with a polio vaccination team was attacked and killed in the Jarma area of Kohat, a neighboring district of Hangu.

On January 27, unidentified gunmen attacked the site of an oil exploration company in the Tall area of Hangu, which resulted in the killing of one security guard.

The Pakistani military has carried out several operations against militants in Khyber Pakthunkwa in the recent years.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
