In his Easter message to the world on April 24, Pope Benedict XVI urged solidarity with refugees from conflict, in particular Africans.

Tens of thousands of people had gathered in Rome's Saint Peter's Square on Easter Sunday to hear the pope give his traditional "Urbi et Orbi" ("To the city and the world") blessing and message.

Christians around the globe today celebrate Easter, the holiest day in the Christian calendar when church teachings say Jesus Christ rose from the dead after his crucifixion.
