Romania's former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase has been sentenced to jail for corruption for the second time.

A court convicted the 63-year-old on January 6 of taking bribes during his time in office and sentenced him to four years in prison.

He was found guilty of illegally receiving 630,000 euros' ($858,000) worth of construction work and imported goods for two homes.

Irina Jianu was convicted of providing those services to Nastase to keep her job as chief inspector at a state construction company.

She was sentenced to four years in prison.

Nastase's wife, Dana, was given a three-year suspended sentence for collusion.

Nastase, who denies wrongdoing, served as prime minister from 2000 to 2004.

He survived a purported suicide attempt in 2012, after getting a two-year jail term in a separate case.
