Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has won the Washington state caucuses.

Romney received 37 percent of the vote on March 3 while former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum and Texas Congressman Ron Paul each received 25 percent.

The BBC reported Mr. Romney as saying the result proved Washington's voters wanted "a conservative businessman who understands the private sector".

Romney needed the win ahead of "Super Tuesday" on March 6 when 10 states will hold primaries and caucuses in the Republican race to face incumbent President Barack Obama in November presidential elections.

Romney is trying to reestablish himself as the front-runner in the party after he suffered three loses in one day last month and narrowly beat Santorum in the election in Michigan, Romney's home state.
