A doctor has been detained in Russia on suspicion of beating a patient to death in an act caught on video.
A spokesman for Russia's Investigative Committee said on January 11 that the chairman of the committee, which probes major crimes, had taken personal charge of the case due to the "large public reaction" to the incident.
The doctor in the southern Russian city of Belgorod, some 580 kilometers south of Moscow, was caught on a security camera punching a male patient in the face, causing him to fall backward and die from a head injury.
The shocking video footage of the attack on December 29 went viral and was aired on national television.
The case comes amid recent reports of other abuse by medical staff in Russia.
In September, the head doctor at a hospital in the Far Eastern town of Artyom was reportedly fired because an elderly patient died while medical staff were distracted by a visit from the mayor.
