Russia Expels Polish Historian Without Explanation

Polish historian Henryk Glebocki

Poland's Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) says a Polish historian has been expelled from Russia without explanation by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB).

According to the IPN, professor Henryk Glebocki was detained in Moscow on November 24 and ordered to leave Russia within 24 hours after he gave lectures in St. Petersburg about the Soviet-era purges of 1937-1938.

The IPN says Glebocki was denied access to archives in Russia that he previously had used to research Polish-Russian relations during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Russian authorities did not immediately comment on the statement.

In October, Polish authorities expelled Russian historian Dmitry Karnaukhov -- accusing him of having ties with Russian intelligence and "participating in a hybrid war against Poland."

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in October that it would carry out a reciprocal response.
