Lawmakers from Russia's ruling United Russia party have unanimously approved the nomination of nationalist Deputy Aleksei Mitrofanov as chairman of the State Duma's new media committee.

The parliamentary faction of United Russia said it fully backed Mitrofanov, who currently represents the A Just Russia faction in the State Duma.

Mitrofanov is a former member of the nationalist Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), which is seen as loyal to the Kremlin despite its occasional criticism of the authorities.

Lawmakers are expected to vote on September 26 on Mitrofanov's nomination as head of the parliament's newly formed committee, which will oversee information policies.
