Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated journalists on the occasion of their annual professional holiday.
According to a press release on the Kremlin website, Putin noted that society understands events and future plans through the "professionalism, talent, objectivity, fairness, and -- sometimes -- civic courage of journalists."
He pledged that the government will "continue to do everything necessary to secure the necessary conditions for their work, for their genuine independence in the transmission of information."
Early on January 13, "Kommersant" journalist Grigory Revzin said he was severely beaten by unknown assailants in downtown Moscow.
Revzin reported that the attackers beat him and ran off without robbing him.
He said he was not sure whether the attack was connected with his work as a journalist.
