Russia has declared the Andrei Sakharov Foundation an "undesirable" organization amid an ongoing crackdown on international and domestic NGOs, independent media, and civil society. The Prosecutor-General's Office announced the decision on January 23, saying that the activities of the Andrei Sakharov Foundation posed a "threat to the basic constitutional structure and security" of the country. The "undesirable organization" law, adopted in 2015, was part of a series of regulations pushed by the Kremlin that squeezed many nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations that received funding from foreign sources.
