Kazan Resident Arrested For Plotting Attack On Factory In Russia's Tatarstan

Updated

Authorities in Russia's mostly Muslim-populated Tatarstan region say they have arrested a man for allegedly planning to commit a terrorist act in the region's capital, Kazan.

A spokeswoman for the Investigative Committee in Tatarstan, Elvira Gazizova, said on October 20 that the 36-year-old Kazan resident faces charges of planning a terrorist attack and supporting an international terrorist organization.

Gazizova said the suspect made three explosive devices in July and tested them.

Investigators say the man planned to use similar devices in an attack against a factory in Kazan.

He is also accused of transferring money to Islamic State militants in Syria.

Authorities did not disclose the identity of the suspect.

Based on reporting by TASS and Interfax

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
