The Shiveluch volcano on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula has begun to erupt, the press service of the Far Eastern region's Institute of Volcanology told RIA Novosti on November 20. The institute said that it had recorded up to 10 explosions per hour and that lava and mud flows were expected. Shiveluch, one of Kamchatka's largest volcanoes with a summit reaching 3,283 meters, is also one of the peninsula's most active ones, with an estimated 60 substantial eruptions in the past 10,000 years.
