Russia today backed Ban Ki-moon's bid for reelection to the post of UN secretary-general.

Russian news agencies quote Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Aleksandr Lukashevich as saying that Russia is "ready to support the candidacy" of Ban for a second term at a Security Council vote today.

Russia is the last permanent member of the UN Security Council to back Ban's reelection.

The UN General Assembly is expected to hold a formal vote on Ban's bid before the end of June.
