Officials say Russian security forces have killed a senior member of an Islamist insurgent group in its North Caucasus region.
Interfax news agency quotes a spokesman for the National Antiterror Committee, Nikolai Sintsov, as saying that Gadzhiyav Gaziyev was shot dead in Daghestan along with another insurgent in a gunfight between the militants and law enforcement agents.
The committee said Gaziyev was considered one of Daghestan's insurgent leaders.
