Russia's Kuznetsova Upsets Number One Williams At Miami Open

Russian double Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova pulled off an upset victory over tennis's No. 1 star Serena Williams at the Miami Open on March 28, knocking Williams out of the competition.

The 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-2 win in the fourth round of the tournament puts the number 15-seeded Kuznetsova into the quarterfinals for the first time since 2009.

Kuznetsova, a veteran who played an aggressive defense while Williams made many errors, downplayed the unexpected win.

"She's still No. 1, and she still plays great," Kuznetsova said. "I'm too old. I've been many times on this court. I love being back here and I'm really happy with my performance."

Williams, a 21-time Grand Slam champion, retains her No. 1 ranking but the loss broke a 20-game winning streak.

"I did the best I could," she said. "I can't win every match. I cannot be 100 percent every day."
