A German newspaper has quoted the father of French President Nicolas Sarkozy as saying the French first lady, Carla Bruni, is expecting a child.
"Bild" quoted Pal Sarkozy as saying that "the two do not want to know the gender in advance, but I'm sure it will be a girl and as beautiful as Carla."
Speculation has been widespread in recent weeks that the 43-year-old Italian-born model-turned-singer was pregnant.
Bruni-Sarkozy already has a son, while her husband, whom she married in 2008, has three sons from two previous marriages.
Sarkozy faces a reelection battle in April, although the rape charges in the United States against International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director General Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who had appeared to be a likely front-runner among potential challengers.
