Doctors in France say they have seen a "slight improvement" in the condition of former Formula One driving champion Michael Schumacher, who was seriously injured in a skiing accident on December 29.

Surgeons carried out a second two-hour operation on Schumacher overnight to remove a bruise on his brain and inserted a device to relieve pressure in his skull.

In a press conference on December 31, doctors said there are "some signs" that his condition is "more under control."

Schumacher is in a hospital in Grenoble facing life-threatening injuries after hitting his head on a rock while skiiing off-piste in Meribel in the French Alps.

Personalities around the world, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton, have sent wishes for Schumacher's speedy recovery.

Schumacher won a record seven Formula One world titles.
