A Russian court has sentenced a former senator to life in prison for ordering multiple killings and financing a criminal group.

The Moscow City Court said Igor Izmestyev, a former senator and oil trader from the central Russian region of Bashkiriya, financed a mob that killed 14 people between 1992 and 2004.

Judge Yelena Guchenkova said the mob also attempted to blow up the son of the region's president, Ural Rakhimov.

Izmestyev challenged the president in an election in 2003.

The court sentenced four more mobsters to up to 23 years in jail.
