And although its women's basketball team got knocked out of contention for a gold medal after a loss to Spain, the Serbian team have a chance to earn a bronze medal in a game with France later this week.
But the biggest victory was Serbia's ascension to the men's water polo final for the first time, giving it a chance for gold after winning bronze in the last two Olympics.
Serbia, the reigning world champion, beat Italy 10-8 in a semifinal match on August 18. It was sweet revenge after losing to Italy in the semifinals of the 2012 London Games.
Serbia will next play Croatia, which advanced to the finals with a 12-8 victory against Montenegro on August 18.
The two Balkan neighbors also played each other in the world championship game last year, with Serbia winning 11-4.
