The office of South African President Joseph Zuma has released a statement saying former leader Nelson Mandela is responding to treatment in a hospital.

The statement said the 94-year-old Mandela was breathing without difficulty after being treated for pneumonia.

Mandela has been in the hospital since March 27, when he was admitted "due to a recurrence of his lung infection."

The March 30 statement said Mandela was "comfortable."
