Moaz al-Khatib, the leader of the Western-backed opposition Syrian National Coalition, has announced his resignation.

Alkhatib made the announcement on his Facebook page on March 24, blaming world powers for not giving rebel forces the ability to “defend themselves” against President Bashar al-Assad’s superior military power.

A spokesman for Khatib confirmed his resignation.

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani said that he regrets Khatib’s decision and urged him to reconsider.

Meanwhile, Arab League diplomats said on March 24 that they will transfer Syria's seat in the group to opposition forces.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar are calling for a show of Arab solidarity against Assad at a two-day Arab League summit that starts in Doha on March 26.
