The United Nations-Arab League's Syria envoy says negotiators have failed to reach agreement on whether Iran should attend Syria peace talks in Geneva on January 22.
Lakhdar Brahimi made the announcement on December 20 after meeting with U.S. and Russian delegations in Geneva.
They also met with diplomats from the other three permanent members of the UN Security Council and from Syria's neighbors.
Brahimi said Saudi Arabia was on the list of some 30 countries invited to the conference, but that the United States remained unconvinced that Iran's participation "would be the right thing to do."
Disagreements over who should represent the Syrian opposition and government, and which regional powers should be at the table have blocked previous attempts to bring Syria's warring sides together for peace negotiations.
