Rebels Claim Capture Of Strategic Dam In Northern Syria

Syrian rebels claim to have captured a strategic dam in the north of the country.

Opposition activists from the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights have posted a video of rebel soldiers at the Tishrin Dam.

Rebels said they captured it early on November 26.

Observatory head Rami Abdul-Rahman said the dam supplied electricity to several key areas in northern Syria, including the country's largest city, Aleppo.

Abdul-Rahman also said the capture of the dam deprived the government of a key route for resupplying and reinforcing its troops fighting in Aleppo and provides a new route for sending help to rebel fighters in the city.

Abdul-Rahman said the capture of Tishrin Dam "means the army basically has only one road left to Aleppo" -- the Damascus-Aleppo highway.

Based on reporting by Reuters, AFP, and AP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
