Russian Submarine With Cruise Missiles Arrives Off Syria's Coast

The Interfax news agency reports that a Russian submarine carrying cruise missiles has arrived off the Mediterranean coast of Syria.

The report on December 8 said the cruise missiles were similar to ones that Russian ships in the Caspian Sea have been firing at Islamic State militants in Syria since October.

The diesel-powered submarine, Rostov-on-Don, was built recently and completed verification tests to join Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in October.

It was in October that Russia announced its navy had begun firing cruise missiles from the Caspian Fleet, about 1,500 kilometers from Syria.

Based on reporting by Interfax and dpa

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
