Avalanches caused by heavy snow have killed at least 17 people in Tajikistan's eastern Gorno-Badakhshan region. Tajik authorities said on February 17 that rescue teams had discovered the body of a teenage girl the previous evening in a village in the eastern Gorno-Badakhshan region. Tajik officials said they registered 69 avalanches in the region in one day, adding that the avalanches may continue until at least February 19. Mountains cover 93 percent of the Central Asian nation's territory, and avalanches and mudslides kill dozens of people every year. To read the original story by RFE/RL's Tajik Service, click here.
