Talabani Recovery 'Encouraging' Following Stroke

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani had a stroke in December.
A doctor treating Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said in an interview on February 24 that the president is able to speak and understand others.

Dr. Najmaldin Karim said Talabani's recovery following a stroke in December is "encouraging."

He said he hopes Talabani will be able to return to Iraq from Germany, where he is being treated, relatively soon.

Karim, who is also governor of the city of Kirkuk, oversees Talabani's medical care when the presdent is in Iraq.

The 79-year-old Talabani is seen as a peacemaker among Iraq's various religious and ethnic groups.
