Tehran Slams U.S. Court Ruling Confiscating Property

Iran has condemned a ruling by a U.S. court that approves plans to sell a 36-story Manhattan office building and other properties owned by Iran in the United States.

In a statement late on April 18, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham called the verdict "illegal."

She said the ruling was a politically motivated decision that violates U.S. obligations on freedom of religion.

The office tower in Manhattan belongs to the Iranian-linked Alavi Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes Islamic culture and the Persian language.

The court ruled that the office tower was subject to forfeiture because revenues from its rent and other funds were being secretly transferred to a state-owned Iranian bank in violation of a U.S. trade embargo.
