U.S. President Donald Trump has told his secretary of state that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with North Korea over its nuclear and missile programs.

“I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man...,” Trump tweeted on October 1, in reference to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The U.S. president added in a separate tweet, “...Save your energy Rex, we'll do what has to be done!”

He did not elaborate.

Trump’s comments come a day after Tillerson said that that U.S. officials had "lines of communication to Pyongyang."

Tensions have been on the rise recently over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs, accompanied by an increasingly angry war of words between North Korea and the United States.

After North Korea’s latest and most powerful nuclear test last month, the UN Security Council approved new sanctions on the country.
