Police Fire Rubber Bullets, Tear Gas On Istanbul Protesters

A plainclothes police officer fires plastic paintball gun pellets to disperse protesters in central Istanbul earlier this month.
Turkish police have fired water cannon, tear gas, and rubber bullets to disperse hundreds of protesters as they gathered to march to Istanbul's Gezi Park, which has been at the heart of weeks of antigovernment demonstrations.

The park and the nearby Taksim Square were the focal point of the unrest that erupted throughout Turkey last month.

The protests began after police on May 31 broke up a peaceful sit-in there against a government redevelopment plan for the adjacent Gezi Park.

Five people died and some 8,000 were injured.

Gezi Park, which was closed after police forcibly removed protesters on June 15, was reopened to the public at the start of the week, but protests there remain prohibited.
