Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has submitted to parliament a protocol approving Sweden's admission into NATO, marking an important step for that country's bid for alliance membership. Turkey had been delaying ratifying Sweden's membership because it says Stockholm has been too soft on Kurdish militant groups that Turkey considers terrorists. All 31 NATO member countries must approve Sweden's application. Turkey and Hungary are the only two that have not yet done so. A parliament vote on the protocol has not yet been scheduled.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
