Five Killed In Turkey Violence Linked To Kurdish Rebels

Officials in Turkey say three Turkish soldiers have been killed in an overnight clash with Kurdish rebels in southeastern Turkey.

Authorities said the clash with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels occurred near the city of Tunceli.

In a separate incident, The Associated Press reports that two Kurdish rebels were killed in a police raid in the city of Sirnak late on May 3.

The operation also left two police wounded.

The rebels have been fighting for decades for greater autonomy in the largely Kurdish southeast.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in violence linked to the uprising since the PKK took up arms in 1984.

Based on reporting by AP, AFP, and Reuters

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
