Firefighters Battle Blaze At Fuel Depot Near Kyiv

One person is dead and at least three firemen are missing after a fire at a fuel depot outside the capital triggered a powerful explosion.

At least 16 tanks, most of them storing gasoline, were on fire on June 9 near the town of Vasylkiv, 30 kilometers from Kyiv.

Emergency services said more than 300 firefighters were mobilized to battle the fire. Officials said at least 14 people had been treated for burns and other injuries.

The blaze began in one fuel tank late on June 8 and spread to eight other tanks with a capacity of 900 cubic meters.

Interior Ministry official Zoryan Shkiryak said police were investigating three possible causes for the fire, including "violations of fuel storage regulations, technical malfunctions, or arson." (Reuters, AFP, Interfax)
