UN Issues Dual Appeal On World Population Day

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has marked World Population Day on July 11 by issuing a call for universal access to reproductive health services.

A statement from Ban's office says reproductive health problems remain the leading cause of ill health and death for women of childbearing age around the world.

Meanwhile, the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization and the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has warned that with more than 7 billion people now inhabiting the planet, global farm production must rise 60 percent by 2050 to meet the needs of the world's growing population.

Referring to expected ecological and climate change challenges, the two agencies said global food production must rise in "a more sustainable way."

Based on reporting by Reuters, AP, AFP, and UN statements

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
