The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says Hollywood star Angelina Jolie was named special envoy of UNHCR chief Antonio Guterres.

The promotion, announced in Geneva, elevates Jolie from her current status of goodwill ambassador.

UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said that the 36-year-old actress was to represent Guterres at a diplomatic level when working on global refugee issues.

Edwards said Jolie was expected to embark on her first mission as UNHRC envoy later this week, but declined to name the destination.

Jolie has traveled the world on behalf of the organization over the past decade, making high-profile visits to refugee camps in Iraq, Haiti, and Pakistan, among other places.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
