American director Terrence Malick's "Tree Of Life" has won the top honor at this year's Cannes Film Festival on the French Riviera.
The traditionally publicity-shy Malick was not present in Cannes on May 22 to accept the Palme d'Or prize.
"Tree Of Life," which stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain, is described as a contemplative film about family life and the creation of the universe.
In the other main Cannes prizes, American Kirsten Dunst won the best actress honor for her role in director Lars von Trier's "Melancholia," while Frenchman Jean Dujardin won best actor for his part in director Michel Hazanavicius' film "The Artist."
