Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez will seek another six-year term in an election next year despite recent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor.

Chavez told the state newspaper "Correo del Orinoco" in an interview published on July 24 that he had "never thought for even an instant of retiring from the presidency."

The 56-year-old Chavez underwent an operation in Cuba a month ago for a cancerous tumor in the pelvic area.

He returned to Venezuela on Saturday after a week of chemotherapy in Cuba, saying that doctors had not found any malignant cells in his body and that he was ready to resume his full work schedule.

Chavez, in power since 1999, is his party's candidate for the 2012 presidential election, seeking a third term in office.
