Well-Known Female Singer Shot Dead In Pakistan

A popular female singer has been shot dead in Pakistan's northern city of Peshawar.

A police official in Peshawar told RFE/RL that Gul Naz, known among her fans as Muskan, was assaulted by unknown gunmen on June 18.

The police quote her relatives as saying that four attackers rushed into the singer's house in Peshawar's Gulburg locality and shot her five times.

She was rushed to hospital, where she died later.

Gul Naz, 38, became popular for her songs in Pashto.

Attacks against female singers are common in Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province, where many consider such work to be un-Islamic.

Bushra, a 18-year-old actress, suffered burns in June 2013 when acid was thrown on her while she was sleeping.

Another popular female Pashto singer, Ghazala Javed, 24, was shot dead in Peshawar in 2012.
