Carmaker Fiat Chrysler says it will conduct a “thorough investigation” of the crash that killed Anton Yelchin, the Russian-born actor best known for major roles in the Star Trek movie franchise.
Yelchin’s 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backward down a steep driveway after he got out at his home in Los Angeles on June 19, crushing the 27-year-old against a fence.
Fiat Chrysler, which owns Jeep, said on June 20 that it was premature to speculate on the cause of the crash.
In April, Fiat Chrysler recalled 1.1 million vehicles worldwide over the risk they could roll away after drivers exit, an issue linked to 41 injuries.
The 2015 model-year Grand Cherokees were part of the recall, U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records showed, according to The Associated Press news agency.
The LA police were quoted as saying it appeared Yelchin had not properly put the car in park mode.
