Officials say a series of attacks at Yemen's Defense Ministry have killed at least 52 people, including foreign medical personnel, and wounded at least 167 others.

The coordinated attack started when a suicide car-bomber rammed his vehicle into the ministry compound in the capital, Sanaa, opening the way for gunmen to attack the complex.

Officials said attackers targeted a hospital inside the complex, and that up to six doctors, including two German nationals and another foreigner, were among the dead.

The ministry statement said troops regained control of the compound after a firefight with the gunmen.

It said "most" of the attackers have been killed.

Yemen has been going through a turbulent political transition since President Ali Abdullah Saleh was ousted in February 2012 after a year of deadly protests against his 33-year rule.

Based on reporting by AP, AFP, and the BBC

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
