At Least 11 Reported Killed In Attack On Yemeni Army Base

At least 11 people, including five soldiers, were reported killed after suspected Al-Qaeda-linked militants attacked an army barracks in southern Yemen.

The attack took place on April 9 in the restive Abyan province, a stronghold of al-Qaeda militants.

Four suspected militants and two members of tribes that support the military were also reported killed.

Al-Qaeda-linked militants in Yemen have exploited a decline in central government control that accompanied Arab Spring-inspired protests last year, which eventually forced longtime president Ali Abdullah Saleh to cede power.

Based on reporting by dpa and AFP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
