Yemeni security forces reportedly opened fire to disperse protesters in the southern city of Taiz today.

Activists and witnesses said the troops fired bullets and tear gas to disperse tens of thousands of protesters gathered in the city to demand the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Activists said several people were injured, some with bullet wounds.

Saleh has ruled Yemen for 32 years. Protesters have been demonstrating since late January to demand his ouster.

Last week, the ruling party said Saleh had agreed to hand over power to his deputy within 30 days of signing a deal, but protesters want him to leave immediately.
